Residential Services

Residential Services are available when out-of-home placement becomes necessary. Children experiencing social, emotional, or educational challenges have unique needs. When their level of care exceeds the resources of their families, schools, and communities, temporary placement is sought on our residential campuses.

Residential services provide a highly structured environment where educational, clinical, recreation, and daily living activities are designed to provide guidance, positive choices, and personal growth.

New Directions’ Residential Services are designed to be effective for children ages 6-20. Youth are referred to New Directions for various reasons. For some, educational needs cannot be met by their home school district. For others, Family Court has deemed out-of-home placement necessary while safety concerns are remedied.

Referrals for residential placement are accepted from Committees on Special Education, County/Local Departments of Social Services, and/or the Office of Child and Family Services

Personal and family empowerment is essential. We believe each family brings unique perspectives, strengths, and resources. Working together, we create a plan that meets your needs and includes your priorities.

When children do not have an identified family resource, we are committed to identifying a loving, permanent family resource in the child’s best interest.

New Directions Residential Services are infused with trauma-informed, strengths-based care, tailored to the needs of the child and family.

Our Wyndham Lawn and Randolph Residential Campuses are Article 29-I Health Facilities. Additionally, all our residential services are Qualified Residential Treatment Programs (QRTP).

Randolph Residential Services combine a structured living environment with activities that promote healing and growth. Our 100-acre park-like campus includes well-maintained condos and supervised apartments. Each living area includes comfortable gathering spaces and a kitchen. Children are encouraged to personalize their rooms, decorating with items important to them.

Nutritious meals are prepared and served by food service professionals in the campus dining room. The Life Skills and Timberwolf areas are often youths’ favorite places.

Social work and case management services are provided on-site. An on-campus health center allows for routine medical services to be provided on-site by nurses familiar with each youth.

Adventure Recreation offers opportunities such as kayaking, canoeing, paddle boards; skiing, and horseback riding in a challenge by choice format. The Randolph Campus also offers:

• 3 miles of trails
• Accredited Adventure-Based Recreation
• Youth Advisory Council
• Indoor recreation facilities
• Accredited Equestrian Program

Educational services are provided on-campus by the Randolph Academy Union Free School District.

Youth requiring specialized educational services reside on our Randolph Residential Campus while receiving a uniquely tailored education at our partner school, Randolph Academy. Smaller class sizes and individualized attention enable a child to “catch up,” while acquiring healthy, new skills for learning and living, leading to a high school diploma.

Agency Operated Boarding Homes (AOBH)

Agency Operated Boarding Homes (AOBH) accept an individual’s strengths and interests, building on their knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully achieve independence. Community engagement is encouraged through school, extracurricular activities, part-time work experiences, volunteering, and recreational activities, and is supported by professional staff who assist each youth in becoming independent, productive citizens.

Fostering opportunities for strength building and personal growth is a primary focus at every AOBH location. Case management services include weekly individual counseling, group and family counseling, treatment, and support. The sessions are carefully designed to address a youth’s behavioral and emotional needs and to assist them in setting and achieving reasonable short- and long-term goals.

Comprehensive medical services are provided by local community health care providers. Psychiatric, psychological, and substance abuse treatment services are available as needed. Job skills training and employment within the community are encouraged. Community involvement fosters a sense of belonging and pride in the wider community while helping improve and develop the skills and character needed to live successfully in a small group setting.

Education is viewed with utmost importance. Each AOBH has developed strong, collaborative relationships with faculty and staff within their school district. Communication is key to educational success. Local schools provide a dedicated tutor who works individually with youth twice weekly on-site, if needed. Individual educational challenges are addressed during tutor sessions.

Each AOBH has a compassionate, dedicated team who serve as role models for youth, promoting safe, respectful, responsible, and goal directed behavior. The comfortable, family-like environment allows for a natural ow of interactions between staff and youth that fuel positive relationships. Opportunity for youth to build on a current trusting relationship with a staff is available through mentoring. Planned mentor activities occur outside of the AOBH.
